Facebook Advertising: 3 new targeting techniques for advertisers

The wonderful world of online advertising has many loop holes, back doors and grey hat areas. You can access these if you are a bit knowledgeable in online advertising and digital monetization. With the rise and the continuing growth of Facebook, they have taken upon themselves to take online advertising a bit further.
To me, the most directed way of online advertising would probably be geo targeting. Now Geo Targeting can spark up a few conversations, usually towards one’s privacy and handling of information. Facebook takes cues from this technique to build and launch a larger, more efficient way of targeting the audience. 3 new techniques have been developed: Connection Targeting, Multiple Country Targeting, and Birthday Targeting.
Connection Targeting – This gives advertisers the advantage to target connections and specific groups connected. Facebook now gives advertisers the power to directly place advertisements on your front page including: if you or your friends are ‘fans’ of something, special apps you are using, group members and/or attendees of a specific event.
Multiple Country Targeting – In the ‘old’ days, you would have to create a specific, singular ad to cater to each demographic; in this case, different countries. Now, advertisers can create one cross platform ad for up to 25 different countries.
Birthday Targeting – Birthdays. Everyone loves birthdays. This one is pretty self explanatory. Facebook knows you and your friends love birthdays. Everyone – usually – is happy on their birthday, so are your friends. Why not advertise to you when you are happy?! It’s like, waiting for someone to be in a good mood to serve the bad news.
I know, I know…some of you may think, “This is stupid. This will never work. Who clicks on that stuff anyways?” Well, chances are, out of the 200 million+ users online, a small percentage of that is worth it. How much exactly? Well…try $500 million.
